Picture this: You tell an AI agent to "Get me running shoes that match my aesthetic, size 13, under $150." The agent searches across every retailer, compares prices, reads reviews, and presents you with the best options. You pick one, and the agent handles checkout when you're ready to buy. Everything happens in one interface.
This is how we believe most booking and shopping will be done within a few years, and we’re starting to enable it with AGI Agents.
Here’s what the user experience of agentic commerce will look like:
- User Interaction Users will command agents through natural language via chat or voice interfaces, expecting to complete entire journeys within that interface. For example, a user might describe a desired product ("Get me a pair of running shoes, size 13...") and the agent will display visual product options, allow items to be added to a cart, and facilitate checkout directly from the chat application.
- Agent Actions Agents will perform end-to-end user journeys, including searching, scraping content, calling APIs, filling forms, and making purchases. This means an agent can navigate to a commerce site, select items, fill payment credentials, and complete a transaction on command.
- Frictionless Experience This will enable a true one-click checkout experience that works seamlessly across all merchants and ecosystems.
So how do we get there? The key enablers for Agentic Commerce are:
- Purchase Execution Agents allow apps to perform checkout on any website, even if they don’t an API. For example, an AI shopping app can offer inventory and checkout for 100 separate merchants, or an AI Assistant app can schedule Instacart or call an Uber.
- Secure Credential Management is essential to protect sensitive user data. We use enterprise-grade secure systems that allow agents to use authentication details (passwords, API keys, credit card numbers) without exposing them to LLMs or third-party services, with all sensitive data encrypted.
- Verified User Intents will include records of user authorization for each payment intent, providing proof of consent to the merchant, issues, and payment provider.
Agents are a new interface.
Ultimately, we anticipate the future internet will be a hybrid of human checkout paths and new dedicated APIs for agents. Browser execution agents will allow agentic commerce to get started right away on current current human-centric UIs. In the longer term, many (but not all) providers might offer more AI-native interfaces, similar to how many websites offer both mobile and web views today.
